mp3 | flight | turns to blood

another jam gem from the cody archive, "turns to blood" is a slogging rock and roll track out of mississippi's steven bevilaqua -- perhaps better known as flight.  after a few seven-inch releases back in 2009, bevilaqua's notoriety and possibly talent peaked in 2010 with the release of his six track ep (the lead riders), only to find the guy almost vanish immediately thereafter.  mysterious business.  be sure to check out the artists bandcamp; the whole ep is great - including the "goodbye horses" cover - and worth a listen or two.  in the meantime, stream "turn to blood" above and grab the (right click, save link as) download here.

stream | shlohmo | don't say no featuring how to dress well

henry laufer, the los angeles-based producer more commonly known as shlohmo, has a new ep laid out set for a march 5 release date. the guy's been on a bit of a tear as of late and tonight's cut only reinforces his title as one of our favorite contemporary producers. the latest single, "don't say no," from the upcoming album, features the topnotch vocals of how to dress well's tom krell. if you're familiar with the two, the product of the collaboration is almost exactly what you'd expect from the artists - which happens to be great. a hazy, and methodically textured r&b track lurks just beneath the uniquely soulful and often harrowing delivery of krell's lyrics.  it's haunting and endearing all at once; check out the stream above.

mp3 | kurt vile | walkin' on a pretty day

another floating, lighthearted jam that deftly serves as a harbinger for the impending warmth of the coming summer months, kurt vile's recently released "walkin' on a pretty day," succeeds in its straightforward and welcomed simplicity. at almost ten minutes in length, it would only seem to make sense for the track to go through a series of transitions and progressions. instead, the song explores and showcases vile's innate ability to construct songs that are almost overwhelmingly basic, while simultaneously demonstrating a delicate sense of precision and an attentive ear.  the song could be an hour long and still feel entirely unforced.  kurt vile's forthcoming full-length walkin' on a pretty daze is slated for an april 9 release date.  stream the albums first single above, and grab the (right click, save link as) download here.

mp3 | shakey graves | tomorrow

UPDATE: as promised, shakey graves removed the album after being up for three days. hopefully you guys were fast.

released today, story of my life by austin, texas' shakey graves goes a long way to reinforcing the idea that the artist might very well be the best one-man show out of texas -- and at the very least, austin. in fact, the city of austin has gone so far as to name february "shakey graves day." it's likely not much of a coincidence that his latest full-length debuts on the very same day. employing the fevered finger-picking skills the likes of townes van zandt accompanied with crisp, clean and downright infectious melodies and hooks, shakey graves solidifies himself as a supreme folk talent.  via the artist's bandcamp:

happy shakey graves day ii
this is an album of unreleased recordings spanning from 2007-2013.  these tunes were done with the help of amazing musicians and even better friends, more live recordings to come in the future.
thank you so much to anyone who has ever helped me along the way.  prosper and enjoy.
this album will be available for three days and then not be alive until next shakey graves day!

be sure to note the three days of availability business.  grab it while you can, by way of his aforementioned bandcamp.  while you wait, stream "tomorrow" above and don't miss the single (right click, save link as) download here.

stream | mikal cronin | shout it out

new song out of mikal cronin, the man responsible for classics the likes of "get along," recently released "shout it out," is the first single to surface from the artists upcoming full-length mcii, which is due may 7.  possibly more commonly known as the bassist for ty segall's live band, mr. cronin just dropped a perfect harmony of jangly garage-rock and refined, deliberate melodies which serve to anchor the track as an instant summer jam; a breath of fresh air that gently lifts one's spirits until we hit that eagerly anticipated warm season.  the cut works at and succeeds in establishing itself as a go-to summer jam.  be sure to check out the stream above and head back for a legit download.  welcome to midweek hump; get over it.

mp3 | wampire | the hearse

new banger out of portland's wampire, the emerging indie-rockers that we will be seeing and shooting in a weeks time. evidently, the guys have been adorned with a considerable amount of hype surrounding their upcoming full-length, curiosity, which is set for release in may and produced by unknown mortal orchestra's jake portrait. with a slow and eerie build-up, "the hearse" goes off with a full and steady pop jangle that dies down about half way through to take a bated breath, only to bounce back with the same energy and conviction that's established early on. definitely keep an eye out for these guys and check back next weekend for an update and some photos to boot. in the meantime, stream the track above and grab the (right click, save link as) download here.

it's been a busy week but we're not going anywhere, stay tuned y'all.
