mp3 | the orwells | other voices

the five chicago-based youngsters known as the orwells have been garnering a great deal of hype and love since they emerged with their top-notch, debut full-length remember when last summer.  the jangly, give-a-fuck, rock and roll is simple and unapologetic, relying on deftly executed riffs and catchy melodies to create a sound that's more than rewarding and entirely addictive.  "other voices" is the first of five tracks to hit the web from their upcoming - and aptly titled - other voices ep, which is slated for a june twenty-six release.  the album will include two iterations of the single: the original and a version produced by tv on the radio's dave sitek.  both are bangers, though, sitek seems to bring something to the table that wasn't necessarily missing before, but is far from unwelcome.  stream sitek's version above and be sure to grab the the orwells' originally produced (right click, save link as) download here.

mp3 | wampire | trains

it's been a while. the combination of finals, a propensity for procrastination and impressively poor time-management skills have found a way to leech the life from myself and all of my creative outlets.  i guess that's art school. but, for now, we're back! and with a great new track from portland's own wampire. we featured their breakout banger "the hearse" a couple months back, but with their first full-length, curiosity due for a may 14 release date, it only makes sense to highlight another of their topnotch tracks. while one could genuinely showcase any of the nine tracks off the upcoming release, "trains," has stolen our hearts and been on -- admittedly -- more than a couple recent playlists. rather than give you guys the rundown, we'll humbly suggest simply giving it a stream above. then grab that (right click, save link as) download here.

mp3 | owl fly south | blink (incandescent days)

there's a lot of "vintage" garage rock floatin' around these days - some better than others. owl fly south, the four-piece janglers from los angeles (ucla, specifically), however, have placed themselves squarely alongside the better half of their contemporaries. deftly melding rock and roll with elements of psych and sixties pop, the guys are able to create a sound that's familiar and comforting, but fresh in its arrangement and delivery.  "blink (incandescent days)" represents some of the young bands earliest and best work.  employing a healthy amount of echo, reverb, steady drums and guitars that seamlessly transition between delicate and fuzzy, owl fly south manages a track that easily warrants a stream.  grab the (right click, save link as) download here

mp3 | dead ghosts | roky said

burger records has been unstoppable for quite a while now, developing some of today's most promising and inspired artists. the four-man band dead ghosts out of vancouver, british columbia go a long way to reinforce the idea that burger might know what they're doing with this music crud. hitting the web a few days ago, "roky said" is the latest single out of the canadians. the track's pacing is wildly effective, dropping off only to come back harder with satisfying - if not cathartic - breakdowns.  driven by jangly, plucked strings, dirty rolling drums and an infectious bass-line, you'd have to be a philistine of some sort to not dig this one.  stream above and grab the (right click, save link as) download here via rollo & grady.

mp3 | black milk | sundays's best // monday's worst

curtis cross, the detroit, michigan native has been in the game for the better part of ten years now, working with industry fat-cats the likes of slum village and j dilla. growing up with the hip hop of the late eighties and early nineties, black milk's production often employs the same timeless, dirty snares and crisp hi-hats of his predecessors. however, while remaining true to his roots, cross won't hesitate to throw out what he knows to explore relatively progressive territory, delving into polished, synth and otherwise electronic production. his diverse and encompassing skill-set makes him versatile and invaluable in a genre flooded with gimmicks and tired formulas. "sunday's best // monday's worst" represents some of his most recent solo work in quite some time and is entirely deserving of a stream.  don't miss the (right click, save link as) download here.

WHILE WE'RE AT IT:

for good measure.  maybe you've heard of danny brown.
